Sometimes it’s hard to remember that Issa Rae catapulted into the spotlight with a show called Insecure and not, I don’t know, Hot Confident Boss Lady. I mean, look at her!
For an appearance on the Today show on Tuesday, July 19, Rae wore a cantaloupe-colored skirt suit layered over a matching sheer lace corset, which completed the monochromatic look.
Some playful details—oversized heart-shaped buttons, a matchy-matchy mani-pedi—prevented the look from drifting the way of the drab skirt suits of the Working Girl era, while the on-trend see-through corset brought the whole thing squarely into the year 2022.
She styled the look with a sleek braided updo, chunky hoop earrings, a small black box clutch, and periwinkle strappy heels. The whole thing looks like something Eve might wear to work in a remake of the 2000 classic Life-Size.
“Being able to let people hone their skills on Insecure, and then watch them show and prove to the point where they’re now demanded by other projects…that’s dope to me, because I saw that happen on Black TV shows growing up,” Issa Rae told in the news show’s first digital cover story. “You start to build a foundation: a group of people that you’ve come up with, and we are the ones giving each other our second chances, and our third jobs, and then our fourth jobs. And they, in turn, are doing the same thing with their extended group of people. I think it’s a mentality that’ll lead to another shift of us looking out for each other.”
Rae is currently promoting her new show for HBO Max, Rap Sh!t, which premieres on July 21.
