After attending the Met Gala for the first time last year, Daisy Edgar-Jones was thrilled to return to the star-studded event for a second time to celebrate Karl Lagerfeld’s illustrious design career. “I can’t actually believe I’m going again—there’s so much I love about the Met Gala,” she told Vogue. “People-watching is one of my favorite pastimes, and the event is perfect to do that, but I also love fashion and I enjoy seeing how people express themselves through clothes.”
For the 2023 Met Gala, the 24-year-old British actor—who’s made waves with her roles in Under the Banner of Heaven and the adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People*—*turned to Gucci for a custom ensemble. “It’s a black two-piece set, which features white piping and bow details, as well as a camellia flower at the front,” she says of her look. “Its classic aesthetic, along with the color palette, nods to Karl’s time at Chanel, but it’s also got its Gucci twists. It’s the most beautiful outfit I’ve ever worn. I feel very elegant but also comfortable in it.”
“Daisy and I were so excited and honored to create something special with Gucci for this year’s Met Gala; we worked together with the design team on how we could celebrate Lagerfeld’s work through a Gucci lens,” says Edgar-Jones’s stylist Nicky Yates of the process behind the look. “The focus is on the feminine bows that are a Gucci signature, and the team designed this beautiful trompe l’oeil effect to give this detail more impact—overall we wanted the look to feel playful, elegant, and striking.”
For the glam, Edgar-Jones wanted to ensure the beauty complemented her ensemble in order to maintain the focus on it. “The hair will be slicked back with a modern twist, as well as an eyeliner that will tie in with the color of my outfit. The aim is for it to look very classic and chic, but also glamorous.”
As for what Daisy Edgar-Jones was looking forward to the most at this year’s Met Gala? “I can’t wait to have a dance…but seeing what everyone else is wearing is always the best bit.”
