Margot Robbie will be always be a Chanel girl at heart, and her 2023 Met Gala look proved as much. The Barbie paid tribute to the man whose legacy inspired this year’s theme—“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”—by resurrecting a Chanel design he sent down the spring-summer runway 30 years ago.
Robbie’s one-shoulder gown, which centers on a transparent corset with gold chain boning, is a recreation of the 1993 original famously worn by supermodel Cindy Crawford. But the archival design draws a direct line between Lagerfeld’s work and the current trend cycle, where exposed panties, sheer textiles, and lingerie-inspired details continue to dominate.
“I’m wearing Chanel, this dress was worn by Cindy Crawford in 1993,” Robbie told La La Anthony during Vogue’s live coverage of the carpet. “They remade it for me and it’s obviously a Karl design. I feel really great in it, actually.”
Margot Robbie also noted in her red-carpet interview that she was the final Chanel ambassador selected by Lagerfeld before his death in 2019. “I had the great privilege of getting to know Karl to an extent,” she said. “I was the last Chanel ambassador that he picked, actually. It is an honor. I’m thrilled that they’re honoring him tonight because he was exceptional.”
