Packing is never easy, but packing for a cold weather trip is infinitely more difficult than packing for a summer one. From knits to coats to boots, the question is not only “How can I fit this in my bag?” but also “How can I bring just one?” While we love a good carry-on, the better option is often a checked bag during fall. Additionally, bring a backpack or weekender tote as your carry-on or personal item.
A fall vacation to a colder destination shouldn’t have you ditching your style just because you couldn’t fit it in your bag. We’re breaking down our best packing tips (including the perfect packing list) to keep you covered for whatever trips your fall will entail. Bon, voyage!
Wear or hold your bulkier items at the airport
In college, I traveled a million times back and forth from the West Coast to the East Coast. The easiest trick I learned when returning to the city after winter break was to hold my big puffer jacket on the plane. Even if I never put it on during the flight, it was nice to easily slip it on after disembarking. Plus, it works well to keep your lap warm during the trip.
Utilize packing cubes and saved pouches
First of all, packing cubes are an efficient way to keep everything flat and neat in your bag. Additionally, they create a way to consolidate bulkier items to fit snugly in your suitcase—without snagging on anything. If you run out of packing cubes before you finish packing, utilize dust jackets or makeup bags for intimates, so they’re not loose in your bag.
Roll, don’t fold
When it comes to packing, the trick is to roll, not fold. Rolled items can be stacked perfectly. Plus, you can fit just about anything when you push things aside and pack everything tightly. If you’re worried about wrinkles, try a wrinkle spray or a travel steamer if you have the extra room. When in doubt, a hair straightener works great, too.
Pack accessories in your carry-on
Scarves and gloves can easily be rolled up and stored at the bottom of a backpack or tote bag. So, save room in your luggage by packing smaller handheld items elsewhere. Your smaller pieces should never hold you back from packing clothing you know you’ll wear.
Stick to the rule of one
Trust me. I love having options just as much as any other person. However, when it comes to fall staples (think: thick knits and bulky coats), it’s best to bring your tried-and-true faves to wear the whole trip. Bring one scarf, one coat, etc. Unless you’re outside 24/7, chances are you won’t be wearing these items 24/7. So, this rule allows you to pack more layers and actual outfits.
What to wear to the airport
half-zip | leggings | tote | white sneakers
At the airport, your main priority should be comfort. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t look cute too. Opt for an elevated sweatshirt, leggings, and sneakers for a foolproof travel look.
A day out exploring
knit tank (plus) | plaid shacket (plus) | trousers (plus) | white sneakers
There’s nothing quite like the quintessential tones of fall—browns, oranges, and reds. Utilize them with a shacket-and-top combo that’ll not only keep you warm but keep you feeling seasonal too.
A night out for dinner
sweater dress (plus) | trench coat (plus) | chunky boots
A sweater dress is a one-and-done outfit for your fall trip. Pair yours with a trench coat and chunky boots for an easy, versatile look you can rely on. If it’s extra chilly, add tights.
For strolling through town
cable knit sweater (plus) | skirt (plus) | chunky boots
Few pieces are more stunning for colder months than a cable-knit sweater. And, when paired with a satin skirt, you can dress yours up for a day walking around town. Complete the look with your booties for an outfit that will work perfectly for your destination Instagram pic.
