Want to know what you’ll be wearing next fall and winter? Just look to Victoria Beckham.
When it comes to smart coats, for the past few seasons the longer the better has been the general rule. While sweeping tailored coats will always have an air of elegance, this fashion month we have witnessed the return of the classic peacoat as well as boxy wool jackets that fall on the upper thigh. There were plenty of signs in the collections that this is going to be a key silhouette for autumn-winter 2023, and further confirmation came from Beckham in Paris this week.
The designer was photographed leaving her Paris hotel in a classic gray marl coat (sensible gray coats were all over the runways), which had an oversized, boxy silhouette, a statement collar, and dramatic cuffs. She kept the rest of her look simple and classic, with black opaque tights, black stiletto court shoes (also a theme of the new collections), and a black leather clutch bag artfully looped around her wrist.
The overall vibe for autumn-winter 2023 is low-key elegance, a mood that was epitomized at Miu Miu on the final day of Paris Fashion Week. The collection explored rush-out-of-the-door dressing (the models’ hair was deliberately undone), but the layering and high-low styling was perfectly balanced. Among the excellent outerwear on the runway: several short tailored coats with the same boxy proportions seen on Beckham. The coats are oversized and roomy enough to accommodate hoodies or sweaters layered underneath.
Consider this a forever buy, so stick to a neutral color palette like Beckham did—think navy, black, or gray marl. Shop the trend, as demonstrated by Victoria Beckham, below:
