For the record, we all love Tessa Thompson! Loved her since Veronica Mars. Loved her in Dear White People. And Creed. Favorite part of the MCU, for sure. So please believe us that this is not a hit piece when we say noooooo, Tessa Thompson, whyyyyyyyyyy.
Dresses over pants, are we bringing that back? The Thor: Love and Thunder star arrived in Venice for the 79th annual Venice Film Festival in an ensemble that channels Rihanna in all the best ways…plus pants????
She has red-tinted hair and red-tinted sunglasses, plus red leather driving gloves. Absolutely perfect, Italian, fashion, no complaints. A patterned bag that both clashes and goes with the stitching on her sheer dress, worn over a black bralette. Sexy yet reserved, it’s giving Vatican couture, vampire Sunday school teacher, day-to-night-to-day. The details are superb, from the darkly feminine bow in her hair to the black heels with a bit of a Tim Burton edge.
But then there’s pants.
Pants!
Why, Tessa, why the pants?
It’s not so much that these pants in particular are a problem—basic black slacks hardly ever are—but are we doing dresses over pants again? Didn’t we decide not to? Her stylist couldn’t have found her a black slip that came to the same hem as the dress? And/or some tights? Or at least add a slit to the dress so it can breathe and open up and let the pants be part of the outfit instead of a base layer?
It looks like maybe the dress buttons in the front…. Honey, unbutton the bottom section! You’re wearing pants!
Because she’s Tessa Thompson, she almost makes this look work, and you might be inspired to try a dress over pants at home. But what starts as a trend may quickly descend into…
You’ve been warned. At least it’s not the pants-skirt.
