Last night, on May 19, Anne Hathaway stole the show on the red carpet for the premiere of her latest film, the period drama Armageddon Time. It was, surprisingly, the star’s first appearance at Cannes Film Festival, and the actor certainly dialed up the glamour for her inaugural arrival, leading many fans to notice a striking resemblance to one of her previous characters, Princess Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi of Genovia in The Princess Diaries.
For those who don’t remember the 2001 Disney classic, Hathaway plays an awkward teen who finds out from her estranged grandmother (Julie Andrews) that she is the sole heir to the fictional European kingdom of Genovia. A royal makeover and etiquette lessons ensue as Hathaway decides whether she will accept her role as a future queen.
However, no 2000s-movie montage was needed for the actor IRL last night. She positively radiated style and grace as she waved effortlessly to the adoring crowds.
Opting for Armani Privé, Hathaway wore a white sequined column gown that featured a tasteful cutout and accessorized with silver strappy pumps from Jimmy Choo. The ensemble was finished off with a giant white silk bow that acted as a floor-length stole, imbuing the glitzy charm of movie star turned Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly.
Of course, no sovereign-worthy look is complete without decadent jewelry, and Hathaway did not disappoint when it came to her dazzlingly adorned neck. For the unabashedly glamorous event, Hathaway wore Bulgari’s Mediterranean Reverie necklace, a breathtaking piece from the house’s new Eden The Garden of Wonders High Jewelry collection that features 10.715 dazzling carats of royal blue cushion-cut sapphire from Sri Lanka. Just like the actor herself, it was the first time the piece had ever been seen on the Cannes red carpet.
“You know, I’ve never been to Cannes, and I’ve been watching the fashion of the film festival unfold for a couple decades now. And I’ve noticed certain things you can never go wrong with,” Hathaway told People m. “You never go wrong with a little sparkle. You never go wrong with something that looks chic and glamorous, but feels very, very comfortable. And I noticed that a lot of my favorite actresses had their firsthand experience wearing all white. So that was what I did.”
