Julianne Moore is channeling Madonna for her latest role: jury president at the 79th annual Venice International Film Festival. A-listers are descending on the sinking city, and while we stateside plebs won’t be able to see the movies for a while, we will be treated to our favorite stars in couture on the red carpet. And on the canals.
Yes, even Oscar winners have to be helped in and out of boats—and none more gracefully than Moore, who had a slew of tanned Italian men gently depositing her onto a water taxi. For the occasion Moore chose a black gown with yellow dots on the skirt and a conical leather bustier. Accented with simple bracelets, small dark earrings, and her signature titian hair, Moore looks clean, polished, and a perfect mix of bare-for-summer and dark-for-fall.
Bag alert! She had a black clutch.
Earlier, Moore went business-casual-nautical chic with loafers, jeans, a white T-shirt, black sunglasses, a blue jacket, and a striped bag. This outfit has gotta be at least 70% Gucci, right? When in Rome Venice!
These are just the opening acts in what’s sure to be a fantastic series of looks from Julianne Moore, who has literally never missed on the red carpet. Her Bottega Veneta number at Cannes was pure elegance. But even more impressive than her style is how she wields her power on set. As one of the few permanent A-list women, she’s in the unique position of being able to advocate for newer actors, and, according to Alicia Vikander, she takes that responsibility seriously.
While filming the 2014 movie Seventh Son, Vikander said, an unnamed man in a position of power told a cruel joke about her. As she later said in an interview, “I was really embarrassed, and I would have just laughed it off…. But Julianne turned to him and said, ‘If you ever do that again, I’m walking out of here and I’m not coming back.’ She was just, like, ‘Don’t you f-cking say that again.’ It showed me that she had the power. And that meant so much to me.” Slay.
